To expand a nationally known domestic violence outreach program in Indiana, partnerships were sought with key stakeholders to publicize the program and reach more shelters. The program allows survivors living temporarily in shelters to use pre-programmed wireless phones with confidential voice mailboxes to reach family, doctors, employers and childcare providers. Targeted partners for this national telecommunications philanthropy drive included the Indiana Attorney General and the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an association whose members are accredited shelters. Seven news conferences were coordinated statewide during three days and shelter residents told their personal stories. The campaign reached all the state’s accredited shelters and received national recognition from PR News for cause-related marketing. According to one of the largest shelters in Indianapolis, the program helped “restore a sense of respect and normalcy” for residents and brought in calls and donations from the public.
